Procedural Advice during healing
The morning after the treatment you may shower. It is suggested you shower with your back to the water jets to avoid the water directly hitting the treated area. Use gauze to blot dry the treated area. If you wish to bathe then please avoid soaking in the bath water or using any bath products. Use gauze or a clean flannel to dab dry. Gently splash the treated area with water twice daily, in the morning and evening. Gently dab dry with gauze or a clean flannel.
For the make up treatments, cover your face when removing clothing over your head, you do not want to snag the pigment. If you have a dressing covering the treated area please remove it as soon as possible when you get home. If you find any lymphatic fluid or blood weeping, gently clean the area with saline/cool boiled water and sterile gauze, blotting gently dry to remove all moisture. Airing the wound is the key.
Eyebrows
- Immediately after and for the next 24 hours continue to gently blot the eyebrows. They will weep a clear fluid – lymph (this is normal).
- The blotting, with damp cotton wool, will remove residue fluid and stop a thick crust from forming. Place a fine layer of Vaseline over the brows, by using a cotton bud – one per eyebrow.
- There is no discomfort after treatment, only slight redness and swelling – which will disappear within a few hours.
- A cold compress can help reduce any redness or swelling.
- Do not tweezer unwanted hairs from around the brows for one week after treatment. If the area is touched after recently tattooed, this could cause infection and the pigment to bleed and smudge.
Eyeliner
Swelling differs with each person, but most people have the appearance of looking as if they have been crying. Puffiness can last for 1 day but a cold compress on the eyes is both soothing and reduces swelling. For the eyeliner treatment it is advisable to book your appointment in the morning to allow as much healing time before bed, as there will be far less swelling the next day.
The effect will look very hard immediately after treatment, but it will soften with the healing process. Once the swelling has reduced and the eyeliner has sloughed away a fine soft look is left. Because the area treated is very fine there is no visible healing. We do not suggest the use of any after care products with eyeliner treatments – just use saline water to bathe the eyes if they feel sore or “tight”.
Do not curl eyelashes for at least five days after treatment or wear mascara. It is advised to purchase a new mascara, but do not use this until approximately 5 days after treatment or better still until the area has completely healed. Do not wear false lashes for 10 days post treatment.
Lip liner, Lip Blush
If you have ever had a cold sore it is imperative you buy some Acyclovir tablets from the pharmacy or from your doctor and follow as prescribed. You have to start taking them 5 days prior to your treatment and for a further 5 days after. This will reduce any chance of an outbreak.
Once the anaesthetic has worn off there may be some swelling and redness and the lips may appear uneven and lopsided. This is perfectly normal; it is the swelling. The area will feel hot, if so gently splash with water and you may place an ice cube over the area. During the healing period there will be no pain only dryness and may appear chapped, to avoid this keep it moist with a very thin layer of Vaseline. Treat “as eyebrows” but note that if you are prone to cold sores, you must continue to take your Acyclovir tablets and place Acyclovir cream on the area, to help to prevent an outbreak. Apply Vaseline lightly for up to three days. Once the area has healed correctly you can then apply lipstick if your wish is to co-ordinate an outfit. Ideally it is best to purchase a new lipstick to avoid contamination.
Be careful when eating citrus, greasy, salty or spicy foods or drinking citrus juices whilst lips are healing. It is best to drink all liquids from straws. Be careful when brushing your teeth not to knock the area. No serious kissing.
Procedure warning: Lazer hair removal around the eyebrows or the mouth will alter pigment colour so it is very important if you are considering having this treatment, you MUST advise your specialist you have had SPMU or tattoos on your eyebrows or lips.
